Day trips to Postojna from Trieste, Koper and Zagreb

Postojna is close to the Italian border and on the motorway to the coast, so it's an easy day out from Trieste and Koper. From Zagreb it's a longer trip.

From Trieste

Trieste is the closest big city on the Italian side, and the drive to Postojna is short. Tours usually include Predjama Castle and have you back in Trieste in the afternoon or early evening. If you have a car, you can do it yourself on the A1 via the Postojna exit.

From Koper and the Slovenian coast

Koper is Slovenia's port, and the cave and castle are a popular shore excursion. Before booking, always compare the tour's return time with your all-aboard time, and leave a buffer.

From Zagreb

Postojna is too far from Zagreb for a relaxed round trip, so tours usually combine it with Ljubljana's old town, and some add the castle too. Expect a long day and a border crossing. If you have time, it's better to stay a night in Ljubljana and visit the cave from there. See getting there from Ljubljana.

Do I need my passport?

Slovenia, Italy and Croatia are all in the Schengen area, so there are normally no routine border checks. Carry your passport or ID card anyway, as spot checks do happen.

Are cruise excursions from Koper safe to book independently?

Many cruise passengers do, but the ship will not wait for an independent tour. Check the tour's return time against your all-aboard time before you book.
